About Little Gugs

Little Gugs is a rustic, secret hideaway, beautifully positioned between the forest, grassland and ocean in the scenic Maputaland region of KwaZulu Natal. Located a short distance away from the larger Gugulesizwe camp, Little Gugs is a separately-run escape offering guests a more intimate and peaceful getaway experience. In addition to this, Little Gugs offers the perfect base from which to experience the magical surrounds of the area.

Little Gugs features just four units, four two-sleeper Tented Rooms each suited to couples and families alike. Each unit offers comfortable, homely interiors and amazing views from private decks, while the shaded braai area is ideal for relaxed coastal evenings under the date palms and starry skies. There's also a swimming pool deck, bar area, and of course, an abundance of activities to be enjoyed.

Little Gugs Setting

KwaZulu Natal is often considered a traveller's dream with its subtropical climate and natural environment that lends itself to adventure and exploration. It is located in the southeast of South Africa, with a long shoreline on the Indian Ocean. It's a hugely diverse region offering a melting pot of cultures, traditions and experiences characterised by an abundance of exciting game-viewing opportunities, historical journeys, cultural excursions and exhilarating water-based activities.

Maputaland is perhaps one of the most spectacular regions in the province, providing a sense of being far removed from daily life and immersed in a tropical paradise. Guests of Little Gugs can embark on nature drives with the camp's 4×4 and enjoy the endless beach, swimming in the rockpools, and wildlife-spotting.

Please note: 4x4 vehicles are required in order to access the camp and to travel between the camp and the beach. If guests do not have a 4x4 vehicle, they can safely park at Gugulesizwe's parking lot in Manguzi and a transfer can be arranged at an additional cost.

Little Gugs impact highlights

The recent renovations at Little Gugs have breathed new life into the beloved establishment, infusing it with a rustic charm and sustainable ethos. The highlight of the transformation is the sundowners deck, where the flooring tells a story of resourcefulness and history. Salvaged wood from an old shack has been repurposed to create a warm and inviting atmosphere underfoot. The metal roofs, sourced from a scrap yard, not only add an industrial touch but also contribute to the venue's commitment to sustainability. Embracing a second-hand aesthetic, the deck's furniture exudes character and a sense of lived-in comfort. This commitment to reuse and recycle extends into the kitchen and dining area, where every piece of furniture has a second life, contributing to the venue's unique and environmentally conscious ambiance

The ultimate goal with Little Gugs & Gugulusizwe is contribute to a sense of community. Big Skies partners with local communities to ensure shared benefits. They are guided by a desire to offer sustainable ecotourism opportunities and experiences and create moments that make deep impressions while treading lightly on the Maputaland ecosystem. They're conscious that our impact must always be a positive one. That’s why they focus on plant-based cuisine, renewable energy, and a level of comfort that’s entirely in keeping with their setting.
