About Fugitives Drift

Fugitives Drift is a spectacular private game reserve and Natural Heritage Site, facing the famous battle sites of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift in KwaZulu Natal. The lodge offers ultimate comfort and luxury, where each generously appointed room features a private en-suite bathroom with both indoor and outdoor showers, air-conditioning, a mini-fridge, and a verandah that opens up to breathtaking vistas of the plains alongside the Buffalo River Gorge. Immerse yourself in delectable cuisine, enjoyed in the spacious dining room or, weather permitting, on the inviting deck. Additionally, relish the opportunity to unwind by the glistening swimming pool, surrounded by spectacular views overlooking Isandlwana and Rorkes' Drift.

Fugitives Drift Setting

Fugitives Drift offers an award-winning getaway destination where guests can learn about the history of the battle sites of Isandlwana and Rorker's Drift in one of the most naturally beautiful locations in South Africa. Led by wonderful guides, thought-provoking and often emotionally- -charged tours are conducted daily to the battlefields. Gracing the north-western skyline from the lodge is the imposing Oscarberg mountain at Rorke’s Drift. Just below, the lower section of the Lodge’s garden offers a panoramic view of a plain bustling with wildlife.

The terrain abruptly descends into the Buffalo River Gorge, marking the site where Lts. Melville and Coghill gallantly lost their lives attempting to rescue the Queen’s Colour of their renowned regiment. In a historical twist, they posthumously earned the first-ever Victoria Crosses, and their final resting place is a mere 15-minute walk from the lodge.

Reviews

  • Fabulous!

This place really is special, regrettably only had one night, wished had been able to stay longer. Beautiful accommodation and gardens, so much effort has gone into the design. Staff delightful and food high quality. Really enjoyed our 2 battlefield tours but left little time to soak up the ambience at the lodge, a repeat visit is needed

  • Must Visit

Words cannot describe this place. If you want to stay somewhere perfect this is it. Everyone should visit this lodge at least once in there lifetime. Apart from the perfect service, ambience and facilities, the depth of knowledge of the guides is outstanding. When visiting the battlefields their ability to put you there alongside the soldiers amd warriors has to be heard to understand. Also there knowledge of the Fauna and Flora of the area matches Mr Attenborough's efforts.

  • Memorable Stay

The vibe was excellent. Everyone was extremely friendly and made the stay a joy. We stayed in the cottages furthest away from the Lodge. Therefore, passing and having selfies with the family of giraffes and zebras a few times a day made the stay even more memorable

  • Historical Getaway

The exquisite storytelling from both Mpesa and Doug Rattery on the tours off of the battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift was truly remarkable and forever memorable. All staff were wonderful, the food was fabulous and we gifted by the company we met. Be sure to visit the library for the breathtaking views.
