Accommodation Description

Camp Kalahari offers a relaxed, classic safari atmosphere with twelve Meru-style tents set beneath a canopy of acacias and palm trees. Each tent is comfortably furnished with wooden campaign beds, vibrant textiles and a private veranda looking onto the surrounding bush. En-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and hot-water showers ensure convenience while still keeping the experience rooted in an authentic, pared-back style. The camp centres around a thatched communal area that includes a lounge, dining tent and a small library, all designed to encourage relaxed connection and conversation. A pool pavilion provides welcome shade and a refreshing place to cool off during warm Kalahari afternoons. Dining is unpretentious and hearty, with meals shared at a long communal table lit by lantern glow and star-filled skies. Camp Kalahari offers an inviting, down-to-earth safari ideal for travellers seeking adventure, affordability and an unfussy connection to the desert landscape.

Setting Description

Camp Kalahari is positioned on Brown Hyena Island, a palm-dotted rise on the edge of the vast Makgadikgadi Salt Pans—one of Africa’s largest and most visually striking desert environments. The setting is defined by wide horizons, dramatic seasonal contrasts and an unmistakable sense of open space. In the dry months, the pans become shimmering white flats stretching endlessly in all directions, creating opportunities for quad-biking and extraordinary stargazing. When the rains arrive, the desert transforms into sweeping grasslands filled with migrating plains game, including zebra and wildebeest. Birdlife also flourishes, adding colour and movement to the landscape. Wildlife in this region is uniquely adapted to harsh conditions: guests may encounter brown hyena, bat-eared foxes, springbok and the camp’s beloved habituated meerkats. This setting offers adventure and solitude in equal measure, with a rare blend of cultural insight, desert ecology and raw Kalahari beauty.
