In its initial phases, Moolmanshoek served primarily as a crop farming area, reflecting a common practice of the 20th century. Over the past four decades, under the stewardship of Willie, a transformative and ecologically conscious shift has occurred, leading to the conversion of the land into a private game reserve and wetland habitat. This conversion involved a comprehensive restoration effort, driven by Willie's recognition of the imperative to preserve a natural ecosystem that had been disrupted by years of farming activities.
Today, the reserve teems with a diverse array of wild animals freely roaming the plains and mountain slopes, including numerous antelope species. Guests also have the opportunity to encounter other 'residents' such as the black-backed jackal, caracal, porcupine, mongoose, and meerkat. The reserve boasts a rich avian population, with recorded bird species including the black eagle, jackal buzzard, bald ibis, grey heron, and eagle owl.
