About Forest Edge

Forest Edge is a peaceful retreat featuring private self-catering cottages and cabins on the periphery of the historic Knysna Forest, within the heart of the Garden Route. The beautiful Rheenendal Valley offers a spectacular getaway location for those seeking an escape in nature, and Forest Edge serves as the perfect launching point for exploring the surrounding area, before coming back to an idyllic setting to unwind. Picture yourself on the verandah, observing birds or deer quenching their thirst at the dam.

As the sun sets, fire up a barbecue under the stars, accompanied by the dance of fireflies and the calls of nightjars, and during winter, cosy up with a good book or a movie by the warming log fire.  Although self-catering, they do offer guests an option to enjoy breakfast at Forest Edge – either at the picturesque under-roof Lily Pond Deck or on your Cottage Verandah (depending on the number of people that have booked breakfast). Experience a touch of charm, where privacy and natural surrounds come together for a magical forest stay.

Forest Edge Setting

Forest Edge is located on the edge of the Knysna Forest and is a gateway to the scenic Garden Route region of South Africa. Guests can enjoy an active adventure with stunning forest walks and biking trails, or relax with a picnic next to a secluded forest stream. For those seeking a refreshing escape, take a dip in magnificent rock pools or simply unwind by lazing in a hammock outside your fully equipped cottage.

The recently constructed rustic Lily Pond Deck, a spacious 64-square-meter under-roof restaurant, has been designed for guests to savour a hearty Farmhouse Breakfast. Positioned against the enchanting Knysna forest, this deck provides a sweeping view of a charming lily pond, with nature serving as the idyllic backdrop.

Forest Edge impact highlights

Forest Edge is committed to the conservation area and has partaken in aggressive invasive species clearing, removed fences between SANparks and Forest Edge so that wildlife can move freely around, and has replaced a diesel generator with a gravity-fed tank solution to provide water during load-shedding. The retreat only employs local staff from a nearby village, and lives in harmony with 2 baboon families from the area.
