Ledges Retreat offers two charming self-catering cottages — Hillside Cottage and The Farmhouse — nestled in the heart of the Northern Drakensberg, surrounded by peaceful valley views and dramatic mountain backdrops. Set on a private smallholding within the Okhahlamba World Heritage Site, the cottages offer travellers a cosy, well-equipped base for exploring one of South Africa’s most iconic natural regions. Each cottage has its own character and appeal. Hillside Cottage is perfect for couples or small families, with a fireplace, open-plan living space, and a shaded patio with uninterrupted mountain views. The Farmhouse, larger and well-suited to families or groups of friends, offers multiple bedrooms, a generous kitchen, and a lawned garden ideal for lazy afternoons or games with the kids. Both units come with braai facilities, indoor fireplaces for chilly evenings, and all the essentials for a comfortable stay.
Guests can relax on the property’s expansive lawns, cool off in the seasonal swimming pool, or head out to explore the region’s incredible hiking trails, waterfalls, and scenic drives. This is the kind of place where time slows down, the stars shine brighter, and mornings start with birdsong and fresh country air.
Setting Description
Situated within the Okhahlamba World Heritage Site, Ledges Retreat is surrounded by majestic peaks like Sungubala, Hlolela, and Sugar Loaf. The property features expansive lawns, a seasonal swimming pool, and a trampoline, making it ideal for families and nature enthusiasts. The nearby Putterill River offers rock pools perfect for cooling off on warm days.

We are located in the Okhahlamba World Heritage site, close to the Royal Natal National Park - approx. 20 mins by car. The closest towns to us are Harrismith (50kms) and Bergville (34kms) for fuel, shops, pharmacy etc.
If you are self catering, please remember to bring all your groceries as there are no shops nearby. We also do not have a liquor license so remember to bring your own alcohol.
Nearby attractions include the Amphitheatre 9-hole golf course, All Out Adventures (5kms) and Royal Natal National Park for hiking and fishing. There is also a super-tube at Hlalanathi (7kms from us) for summer-time fun! Outrides can be booked at the Northern Horse at Montusi (approx 7kms from us). Please enquire for more details. Game drives at Kilburn Farm can also be organised, please ask for more details.
On the culinary side, we are 8kms from the Tower of Pizza, and 7kms away from the Oak and Ale Pub and Restaurant (big screen TV!). For mountain bikers, over 150kms of challenging trails are right on our doorstep, and of course there is plenty of space to just walk!

How to get there
Directions to Ledges Retreat
We are at the end of District Road D119 (just before The Cavern Resort):
Route A: From Johannesburg
At Harrismith, take the N5 route towards Bethlehem for 4 km then turn left to Qwa Qwa (R74 & R712)
Travel 8km
Turn left, following the R74 towards Bergville and the Oliviershoek Pass.
Travel for 38kms, continue a little way beyond Little Switzerland.
As the Pass levels out turn right at the Northern Drakensberg sign.
Travel towards Royal Natal National Park for 6km only.
Just after the Tower of Pizza, turn right at the sign to The Cavern, Alpine Heath and Hlalanathi.
Continue past the turn off to Hlalanathi and stay on the road towards Alpine Heath and Montusi. Drive past All out Adventures on your left and past the turn to Alpine Heath and Montusi on your right.
Continue on past a green shed on your left hand side and over a small bridge.
About 2kms on you will see a sign for Ledges Retreat on your right hand side. Turn in here and park.
If you reach Cavern you have gone past us, so turn around and drive back about two km's
Route B Durban:
We are at the end of District Road D119 (just before The Cavern Resort):
From Durban, take the N3 beyond Estcourt.
6km after the Shell Ultra City, Exit 194, take the left glide off towards the Northern Drakensberg, Bergville and Winterton (R74).
Travel through the towns of Winterton and Bergville, and on towards Harrismith.
About 29km beyond Bergville (after Outspan Farm Stall and the turn to ATKV Drakensville) turn left towards the Northern Drakensberg (you will see a whole lot of signs for Alpine Heath, Montusi, Cavern etc) (at the base of the Oliviershoek Pass).
Travel towards Royal Natal National Park for 6km only.
Just after the Tower of Pizza, turn right at the sign to The Cavern, Alpine Heath and Hlalanathi.
Continue past the turn off to Hlalanathi and stay on the road towards Alpine Heath and Montusi. Drive past All out Adventures on your left and continue on past the turn to Alpine Heath and Montusi (you’ll the sign for them on your right, drive past the turn). We are about 5kms from All Out Adventures.
Continue on past a green shed on your left hand side and over a small bridge.

Turn in here and park.
If you reach Cavern you have gone past us, so turn around and drive back about two km's.

Please note: your booking is only confirmed once we have received your deposit (payable when booking is made). Proof of payment must be sent to jessica@ledgesretreat.co.za. Should we not receive your deposit, we reserve the right to cancel your booking. The remaining amount is payable one week prior to arrival. Arrangements can be made for the remainder to be paid on arrival. No refunds for early departures, bad weather, late arrivals or no shows. COVID-related cancellations are subject to our normal cancellation policy. However, we are happy to postpone your booking to another date (subject to availability of accommodation) and allocate your deposit to your new booking.
