Whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, or on a quick overnight stop, the guest house provides clean, cosy, and affordable accommodation just 15 minutes from the Royal Natal National Park. The guest house features six tastefully decorated rooms, each with a private entrance and en-suite bathroom. Some rooms include tea- and coffee-making facilities and views of the surrounding gardens or mountains. Guests can enjoy hearty breakfasts in the communal dining area, relax beside the swimming pool, or stretch their legs along the nearby walking paths and riverbanks. Ledges Retreat is known for its friendly hosts, quiet setting, and convenient access to the best of the Drakensberg.

Surrounded by the peaks of the Okhahlamba World Heritage Site — including Hlolela, Sungubala, and the iconic Amphitheatre — Ledges Retreat sits within a quiet farming valley not far from the Putterill River. The area is well-known for its hiking, rock pools, waterfalls, and adventure activities, yet the retreat itself remains peaceful and unspoilt. With easy access to the R74 and under 30 minutes to Bergville, it’s perfectly placed for both rest and exploration.

How to get there

Directions to Ledges Retreat We are at the end of District Road D119 (just before The Cavern Resort): Route A: From Johannesburg At Harrismith, take the N5 route towards Bethlehem for 4 km then turn left to Qwa Qwa (R74 & R712) Travel 8km Turn left, following the R74 towards Bergville and the Oliviershoek Pass. Travel for 38kms, continue a little way beyond Little Switzerland. As the Pass levels out turn right at the Northern Drakensberg sign. Travel towards Royal Natal National Park for 6km only. Just after the Tower of Pizza, turn right at the sign to The Cavern, Alpine Heath and Hlalanathi. Continue past the turn off to Hlalanathi and stay on the road towards Alpine Heath and Montusi. Drive past All out Adventures on your left and past the turn to Alpine Heath and Montusi on your right. Continue on past a green shed on your left hand side and over a small bridge. About 2kms on you will see a sign for Ledges Retreat on your right hand side. Turn in here and park. If you reach Cavern you have gone past us, so turn around and drive back about two km's Route B Durban: We are at the end of District Road D119 (just before The Cavern Resort): From Durban, take the N3 beyond Estcourt. 6km after the Shell Ultra City, Exit 194, take the left glide off towards the Northern Drakensberg, Bergville and Winterton (R74). Travel through the towns of Winterton and Bergville, and on towards Harrismith. About 29km beyond Bergville (after Outspan Farm Stall and the turn to ATKV Drakensville) turn left towards the Northern Drakensberg (you will see a whole lot of signs for Alpine Heath, Montusi, Cavern etc) (at the base of the Oliviershoek Pass). Travel towards Royal Natal National Park for 6km only. Just after the Tower of Pizza, turn right at the sign to The Cavern, Alpine Heath and Hlalanathi. Continue past the turn off to Hlalanathi and stay on the road towards Alpine Heath and Montusi. Drive past All out Adventures on your left and continue on past the turn to Alpine Heath and Montusi (you’ll the sign for them on your right, drive past the turn). We are about 5kms from All Out Adventures. Continue on past a green shed on your left hand side and over a small bridge. About 2kms on you will see a sign for Ledges Retreat on your right hand side. Turn in here and park. If you reach Cavern you have gone past us, so turn around and drive back about two km's.
