Swellendam is the 3rd oldest town in South Africa with over 50 national monuments. It also boasts the largest youngberry growing region in South Africa. Enjoy berry picking (Nov – Dec), liqueur tastings, and a variety of historical outings.
Swellendam, has been named after Governor Hendrik Swellengrebel and his wife Helena Ten Damme. In 1795 the residents, who were frustrated at the inadequacies of the company, revolted and declared themselves a Republic, with Hermanus Steyn as President. The Republic was short-lived due to the arrival of British settlers who soon turned Swellendam into a profitable commercial empire. In 2011, the Swellendam Municipality area re-declared itself a Republic dedicated to the principles of the New South Africa; celebrating rural life, racial harmony, and respect for nature and wildlife.

As you approach Swellendam turn left onto the R60 in the direction of Ashton/Worcester, When you get to the 4waystop, go straight over and continue for approx. 1.5km. First you will see a brown Wildebraam Sign, and then a green "Hermitage" sign. Turn Right at the Hermitage sign. Travel approx. 100m. Take your first left onto a dirt road (Hermitage Huisies/Wildebraam signs) and continue straight for +600m. Hermitage Huisies Self Catering Cottages entrance is signposted on your left.

As you approach Swellendam pass the first 2 turnoffs into Swellendam. At the 3rd turnoff marked SWELLENDAM WEST turn right onto the R60 in the direction of Ashton/Worcester. Yes. There is a KolKol wood-fired hot tub and two woodfired HOTPOTS for private cottage hire. R450 one night (if possible), R750 two nights, R1050 three nights etc. Pre-booking and payment are required. Bathsalts, Blitz, Water and Wood included. They are booked on a first booked first served basis. Once confirmed, your hosts will place the tub at your cottage for your enjoyment only.
Yes. The farm does allow dogs on the farm. Please note that none of the cottages are enclosed and there are horses and other animals on the farm, so only very well-behaved dogs might apply at an additional charge.
