Accommodation Description

Muratie Wine Estate offers overnight guests the George Paul Canitz Guest Cottage — a one-bedroom, self-catering retreat on one of South Africa's oldest wine farms, dating back to 1685. The cottage, once the studio of renowned artist George Paul Canitz, features a queen-size bed, en-suite bathroom with shower, and a separate lounge with a large fireplace. A fully equipped kitchen and braai area make it easy to settle in for an extended stay. Expect vintage furniture, original artwork, and Bohemian flair throughout — this is a space with genuine character, not a cookie-cutter holiday rental. Step outside to mountain views across the Simonsberg range, and enjoy complimentary WiFi and a flat-screen TV for quieter evenings. Breakfast is available by arrangement at the estate's Farm Kitchen restaurant.

Setting Description

Muratie sits in the Knorhoek Valley on the slopes of the Simonsberg, just ten minutes from central Stellenbosch and roughly 43 kilometres from Cape Town. The estate is surrounded by vineyards and mountain fynbos, with hiking trails and the popular Simonsberg mountain biking singletracks accessible directly from the property. On-site, guests can explore the historic cellar for wine tastings, visit the Mok art gallery housed in the original 1685 farmhouse, browse antiques at the Oom Samie se Winkel outpost, or sample craft spirits at the 9 Orphans gin distillery. The Farm Kitchen restaurant serves meals from Wednesday to Sunday, pairing local produce with Muratie's award-winning wines. It is a genuine working wine farm with over three centuries of history woven into every corner — ideal for guests who appreciate character over polish.
