Situated on the banks of the Botrivier, this eco-friendly guest farm is constructed entirely from upcycled materials, providing a tranquil, off-the-grid retreat that harmoniously blends sustainability with comfort. The farm's design draws inspiration from the enchanting worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien, creating a whimsical atmosphere where guests can escape, reconnect with nature, and enjoy a peaceful respite alongside their furry companions.

Whether enjoying the peaceful riverbanks, the shade of ancient oak trees, or the panoramic views of the valley, guests are immersed in a natural haven that feels far removed from the bustle of everyday life.
There is no shortage of ways to experience the beauty of the Elgin Valley while staying at Underhill Farm. A short drive away, Porcupine Hills offers scenic hiking trails that wind through indigenous flora and provide breathtaking views of the valley below. In Caledon, Venster Kloof Nature Garden is a peaceful spot for leisurely walks among fields of daisies and rugged kloofs dotted with aloes. Underhill is less than 100km from Cape Town, making it ideal for a weekend escape or mid-week getaway.
The farm is on the Van Der Stel Pass, which is popular for cycling and hiking. Franschhoek, Hermanus, and Botrivier are all within 40min of the farm and offer wine tasting, fine dining, outdoor adventures, shopping and more.

How to get there
UnderHill Farm is on the van der Stel pass in the Overberg located between theewaterskloof dam and the historic town of Botrivier.
From Cape Town, take the N2 over Sir Lowrys pass heading away from Cape Town, passing through Somerset West;
Turn left onto the R321 at Peregrines (after stopping to get some fresh produce);
Your next turnoff is about 800m after peregrines, turn right at the signpost to Villiersdorp The R321;
You will not go through the town of Grabouw, take the turnoff and stay on this road for 21 km , along the Viloenspass through the apple orchards, until you get to the sign that indicates Bot River and Eerste Hoop on the right The van der stel Pass;
Turn right on this turnoff;
After 8,2km (3,9 km of this is dirt road) you will see the signpost for the entrance to the farm on the left. The entrance is after Eerstehoop and before the bridge.
Underhill farm is fairly remote and does not have any direct access from the main road (van der Stel pass) making it ideal as a quiet and private getaway, but that does mean access is through our neighbours wine farm Eikenhof, and you will get lost if you don't follow the directions, especially at night.
In addition security is very important, and as such gates are locked and access controlled at night and over weekends, so please read the below carefully.
Access is through the main entrance off the van der Stel pass farm E33 Eikenhof wine farm.
Follow the road through the winefarm with the river on the right and vineyards on the left.
Keep straight on this road until you get to the gate and Fence at Underhill.
Hobbit Hollow is immediatly on your Right.
Oak is straight ahead.
Greenhouse cottage is to your left.
Rivendell is down the middle of the farm, and on your left.
