About Lalibela Game Reserve Lentaba Lodge

Overlooking sweeping valley views in the private Big 5 Lalibela Game Reserve, located in the Eastern Cape, Lentaba, the "lodge on the hillside," accommodates 20 people in ten secluded thatched chalets, comprising 5 luxury and 5 classic units. Tucked away where magnificent indigenous gardens seamlessly blend into the surrounding bush, each en-suite, thoughtfully-spaced chalet features a private observation deck to maximise vistas of the valley bushveld. The main lodge, decorated in a traditional African safari style, features a spacious lounge, a viewing deck, and a sunlit swimming pool ideal for leisurely afternoons.

Numerous inviting spots are scattered throughout the lodge, including two decks with uninterrupted views of the valley and waterhole, an indoor lounge, and an outdoor lounge. Lentaba Lodge also features three fireplaces, contributing to the cosy safari ambience it is renowned for. The outdoor dining "boma" provides a panoramic view of a spotlit waterhole for night game viewing, complemented by a stylish indoor dining area. Brunch is served al fresco on the main viewing deck. To fully immerse yourself in the African safari experience, we recommend a stay of 2 or 3 nights.

Lalibela Game Reserve Lentaba Lodge Setting

Lalibela Game Reserve stands as a distinctive wildlife sanctuary in the picturesque Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is characterised by a singular, continuous, and entirely self-sustaining block where all species roam freely. In contrast to other reserves, Lalibela avoids segregating lions, buffalos, and elephants into separate enclosures, fostering a harmonious natural environment. Notably, Lalibela holds the remarkable distinction of having more lions than viewers, and a stringent vehicles-per-sighting policy ensures unmatched wildlife encounters without distractions.

What further sets Lalibela apart is its unwavering commitment to community and conservation. Every surplus revenue is reinvested into these vital areas, with a firm resolve to never extract profits from the reserve. The landscape itself enhances Lalibela's uniqueness, with the prevalence of grassland savanna supporting an exceptionally high density of game, surpassing other Eastern Cape reserves. This abundance, coupled with remarkable numbers of plains game species, sustains an impressive predator population. Additionally, Lalibela stands out as one of the very few Eastern Cape reserves without public roads traversing its expanse, guaranteeing an undisturbed and immersive experience in this extraordinary wildlife haven.

Lalibela Game Reserve Lentaba Lodge impact highlights

Lalibela embodies the principle of "Conservation for conservation's sake," a commitment that permeates diverse aspects of environmental stewardship. Preservation endeavors at Lalibela extend to both indigenous flora and fauna, coupled with a conscientious approach to minimizing waste within the reserve. A notable ongoing project illustrating this dedication involves the meticulous removal of alien wattle trees. In this process, extracted trees are carefully burned, and the resulting ash is reintegrated into the soil. Water conservation is also a focal point, with Lalibela featuring an on-site water purification plant. Utilizing a sophisticated filtration process, water is efficiently managed at the lodges, emphasizing sustainability in resource utilization.

The dedication to wildlife conservation is reinforced by a passionate team actively involved in safeguarding the reserve's biodiversity. Lalibela's anti-poaching unit plays a pivotal role in shielding endangered species from external threats. Beyond the environmental realm, Lalibela's commitment extends to the local community, with staff originating from the region. The establishment of diverse initiatives, ranging from feeding schemes to addressing primary healthcare needs, underscores Lalibela's holistic approach to conservation that goes beyond the reserve boundaries, positively impacting both the environment and the community.
