Balule Nature Reserve is a protected area in Limpopo Province, South Africa, which forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park. As part of a wildlife conservation initiative, all fences separating these associated reserves - Balule, Timbavati, Klaserie, Umbabat - and the Kruger National Park have been removed. Conservation efforts have ensured that the wildlife population includes all of the Big Five game: Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Leopard and Rhinoceros. The Reserve is just under 60,000 hectares, and is home to over 30 species of mammal, and the variety of birdlife in the Reserve is some of the best in the country, offering over 340 different species, including the Big Six (Kori Bustard, Ground Hornbill, Lappet-faced Vulture, Pels Fishing Owl, Marshal Eagle and Saddle-billed Stork). Located in the subtropical Lowveld, the Reserve contains multiple eco-zones, resulting in a significant variation in the flora with over 336 documented tree species in the region. Baobab trees, leadwood, knob thorns, marula and mopane trees are dominant species in this wooded savannah. The diverse flora accommodates a diverse array of fauna. The rivers and other watering holes are home to hippos and crocodiles. Maninghi is fortunate to be situated on the banks of the Olifants River, which flows through the Game Reserve, and attracts a wide variety of different animals.

Kruger National Park: South Africa's largest and most famous game reserve is a short distance away from Maninghi Lodge. Put your spotting skills to the test in a self-driven safari, and see if you can spot the Park's Big 5 residents. Kruger is also home to 550 species of bird. You can also book guided tours to the park in our vehicles (Full Day), or you're welcome to hire one of our guides for a self-driven excursion. Guests looking to overnight in the park can also make use of our guides, or book a multi-day tour, and are encouraged to request this when making their booking. Speak to your hosts when booking, and we'll arrange your access and tour into the park for you. Bird watching: Maninghi enjoys a rich and varied bird life, thanks in part to its proximity to the Olifants River, as well as to major parks nearby such as the Kruger National, and is home to 340 unique species, including "The Big 6" (Kori Bustard, Ground Hornbill, Lappet-faced Vulture, Pels Fishing Owl, Marshal Eagle and Saddle-billed Stork). The Lodge also has two sycamore-fig trees near its viewing balcony, which attract many interesting varieties of bird, such as the Trumpeter Hornbills, Purple-crested Turaco and Plum-coloured Starling. Through our guided walks, game drives or guided tours, you'll be able to spot an incredible diversity of bird and wildlife. The Lodge also has several excellent birding books and reference guides in its library. Game drives: Nothing completes a day in the bush like a game drive by one of our highly experienced hosts, who are keen to help you spot your favourite animal or can educate you on aspects of bush lore and animal behaviour, in our open-safari vehicle. Balule Nature Reserve is home to The Big 5, and a variety of general game and birds.
