Birding Break
We spent a couple of days at The Outpost for a birding break. Lovely location. The rooms are set out over a valley with big views. Staff, service and facilities were excellent, especially our guide, Sam, who was extremely knowledgeable about the birds (and other wildlife) in the area .

Wonderful time away
Our reception and overall treatment was just fabulous. From reception to departure we were treated with the utmost professionalism. Definitely compliments to the chef. The rooms are spectacular and the view just simply amazing.
Above the banks of the majestic Luvuvhu River, in a remote and northern area of South Africa’s world-famous Kruger National Park, lies the luxurious Outpost lodge. Relax and recharge while surrounded by nature in one of 12 luxury suites, which are inter-connected via a Zimbabwean teak walkway and all converge at a central lodge area. The contemporary architecture of the lodge is balanced by the rugged and untouched beauty of the surrounding plains and the tranquility of its low-impact design elements.
The Makulele region’s vast and scenic beauty makes The Outpost the perfect place to celebrate an intimate wedding, special anniversary, honeymoon, or even an intimate corporate team-building event. The Outpost offers a range of activities including game drives, bush walks, in-room spa treatments, bird watching, and both indoor and outdoor dining experiences. Day trips to the nearby Makuleke Village, Thulamela archaeological site, and Crooks Corner also provide guests with information about the area's rich cultural and historical heritage.
Perched on a hillside with views across the expansive wilderness of northern Kruger, and surrounded by a fever tree forest, the Outpost falls within the Makuleke region concession area, which extends northwards to the Limpopo River and borders Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
Teaming with biodiversity, this special conservation area near Kruger’s Pafuri Gate is known for some of the best wildlife viewing in South Africa. Home to the Big 5 and some of the oldest and most spectacular giant baobab trees, the area also boasts over 350 bird species, including the Scarlet-chested Sunbird, the elusive Pel’s Fishing Owl and Scops Owl, making it a haven for all nature lovers.

Self-drive from Johannesburg. From Johannesburg, take the M1 North to Pretoria via Centurion. Drive straight along this highway and follow the Pietersburg/N1 North signs. The M1 North eventually becomes the N1 North. When close to Pietersburg/Polokwane, follow the N1 North signs towards Louis Trichardt/Makhado. Follow the N1 North, past the turn-off to Louis Trichardt and proceed towards Musina. Proceed along the N1 and approximately 57 kms after the turn-off to Louis Trichardt (just after the Baobab Toll Gate), you’ll find the R525 turn-off to Tshipise and Pafuri to your right. Take this turn-off to your right and proceed along the R525, straight on past the turn-off to Tshipise. Please be careful of potential potholes or stray animals like cattle, wild donkeys and goats on this road. Enter the Kruger National Park through Pafuri Gate. Please tell the gate guard that you are staying at The Outpost and he will reduce your entry fee into the Kruger Park. From this gate travel until you see the sign for The Outpost (approx 5.6 kms). The sign is built from rocks and is on the lefthand side of the road. Turn right at the sign and follow the dirt road for 4 kms until you reach The Outpost
