Accommodation Description
Set on a working family farm high in the Magoebaskloof mountains, Zwakala River Retreat invites you to step into a slower pace of life. The cottages sit alongside a clear river and offer comfortable self-catering stays for couples, families or small groups. Each cottage is distinct: for example, the two-bedroom Legodi Cottage has room for four and additional built-in couch sleeping; the Cob House is constructed from earth and stone using sustainable methods and includes two bathrooms and solar lighting. All cottages feature fireplaces, outside braai areas, fully-equipped kitchens (gas stove/fridge) and decks or verandas gazing out over the forest or valley. Some cottages even omit mains electricity for a more rustic feel, with hot water from a donkey boiler and lit fires, while others offer full power. Guests arrive, unpack and simply let the mountain air, river sound and star-laden skies refill them.
Setting Description
The retreat lies where the Broedestroom River winds through indigenous forest and open pasture on a family farm above Haenertsburg. Mornings often begin with mist drifting across the river and evenings end with firelight flickering on veranda floorboards. The glen of the farm is home to horses, sheep, wildflowers and birdlife, all within reach of the cottages. A short walk from the farm lane takes you down to the water’s edge for a swim, or along trails through forest slopes. Also part of the property is an inviting craft brewery and a farm-venue cafe, making the feel both secluded and connected to something local and lively. Whether you stay for a weekend or a longer break, the setting makes it easy to slow down, reconnect with nature and simply be.
