Platbos Forest stands as one of the scarce remaining indigenous forests in South Africa, representing a Lowland Afrotemperate forest remnant of extraordinary woodland home to ancient trees, some of which have gracefully endured for over a millennium. Tucked away on the slopes of the Baviaanspoort Hills, Platbos Forest is a true nature-lovers retreat, and graces the landscape along Grootbos Road situated between the fishing village of Gansbaai and the coastal town of Hermanus in the Western Cape Province.

In proximity to this natural wonder, Southern Right whales gather annually in the Spring, choosing the azure waters of Walker Bay just a few kilometres away from the forest as the backdrop for birthing their young. This secluded hideaway offers private tented accommodations and cosy cabins, each comfortably accommodating up to 2 guests. What sets Platbos Forest apart is its exclusivity, granting guests the rare privilege of having this distinctive and beautiful forest venue entirely to themselves.

What an experience! If you're looking for peace, quietness and tranquility, then a magical adventure at the Old Olive Cabin is the place to be. At Platbos, the forest has different hiking trials that take you on incredible journeys. I cannot wait to go back to the mystical land of the Platbos Forest!

A magical forest experience. Pristine forest. Vibrant birdlife. Comfortable camping. Peace and quiet. A labyrinth. This worthy reforestation project also revitalises body and soul. Will definitely return.

Peaceful Retreat
We loved the location, the forest surrounds and the peace in a rustic setting. The owners have done a tremendous conservation job there which is well worth supporting. Our friend from Zim was in her element as she loves trees, and here she had a new experience. The bushbucks were regular visitors. The accommodation was very comfortable, well well-provisioned.We will definitely come again in the future.

Platbos Forest impact highlights

Situated off-grid, Platbos Forest Reserve sustains its accommodation units with water sourced from rivers and dams. While the region currently does not face the stringent water restrictions seen in Cape Town, they promote responsible usage of natural resources among guests. Four out of our five accommodation units feature eco-friendly composting toilet systems, emphasizing the commitment to sustainability. Additionally, all water consumed within the accommodation units undergoes recycling, contributing to the preservation of the forest ecosystem. To further align with its eco-conscious practices, Platbos Forest provides biodegradable and non-harmful washing-up liquid for the convenience of guests.

They only use biodegradable cleaning products. They do not use any poisons/insecticides at the Reserve. They employ local staff. The accommodation business is woman-owned. Guests receive a Platbos tree seedling to take home and plant. Also, 5% of guests' accommodation fees go directly to the Platbos Conservation Trust, an NPO.

Since November 2023, a total of 94,142 forest trees sourced from the Platbos Nursery have been generously sponsored for planting in the Reforestation Sites as part of the Platbos Reforestation Project. Notably, fire breaks were established to enhance the overall safety and resilience of the area. The commitment to environmental conservation is further exemplified through a valuable partnership with Greenpop, involving the sponsorship of tens of thousands of trees. A significant milestone was reached in August 2018 when, after years of persistent advocacy, Platbos was officially declared a privately owned Provincial Forest Reserve. This legal designation ensures rigorous protection for Platbos, supported by a comprehensive forest management plan endorsed by Cape Nature and the Platbos Conservation Trust. With this foundation in place, the ongoing conservation efforts are poised to safeguard the forest for the benefit of future generations.
