Kololo Game Reserve impact highlights

In response to the looming threat, Welgevonden Game Reserve has implemented a suite of conservation measures aimed at safeguarding its rhino population. These strategies encompass anti-poaching patrols, the utilization of tracking technology to monitor rhino movements, and the establishment of a dedicated rhino monitoring team.

However, the success of these conservation endeavors hinges on adequate funding, and tourism emerges as a pivotal force in supporting rhino conservation efforts in Welgevonden. Visitors to the reserve contribute to this cause by paying a conservation levy, which directly funds anti-poaching patrols and various other conservation initiatives.

Tourism assumes a critical role in the triumph of rhino conservation not only in Welgevonden but also in other reserves across South Africa. Tourists, by visiting these reserves and paying conservation levies, become direct contributors to the protection of endangered species such as rhinos. Beyond direct financial support, tourism creates an economic incentive for local communities to actively participate in and endorse conservation initiatives, as they reap benefits in terms of employment and other opportunities generated by the tourism industry.

At Kololo, prioritizing sustainability is a core commitment. They take pride in their certification from Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa, an organization rigorously assessing the tourism industry across various criteria. This certification is a testament to their dedication to responsible practices. However, their ambition extends beyond this; they strive to significantly diminish their ecological impact, alleviating the strain on nature.

Their approach involves adopting greener methods in managing water, energy, and waste. They are actively pursuing comprehensive plans to transition to solar power, a crucial step in further aligning our operations with environmentally conscious practices.

Kololo Game Reserve has established a collaboration with EcoTraining to integrate certified apprentice field guides into Kololo through their six-month lodge placement program. Recognized as the foremost authority in field guide and nature training in South Africa, EcoTraining leads the way in providing comprehensive education in this field.
